I don't think it's all that common that we see such a scenario, playing out in front of our eyes, or even less often, in front of our cameras.

It was being in the right place at the right time.
I have a local farmer friend who has about 900 acres near my house. I have been going out there before work because I am looking for a particular cat to get pictures of. This morning I took a shot of a dragonfly as it was pretty boring and was watching. Next I hear a scream, turn and this fawn is running right by me with a coyote right behind. Some of the shots are about 200 yards away.
It really happened fast. I have many more shots but I didn't want to overload.
A great morning for me..not so much the fawn.

6. I used to sit and watch prairie dogs. Amusing little things.

One day a mother Coyote was out with her 2 pups and she was using the prairie dogs to teach her young to hunt. She would chase a prairie dog down and hold it still while her pups got closer and closer. She would then let the pd loose and chase another one; her pups would follow, giving chase of their own. Once again she would hold the pd down and her pups would move in, usually to play with the pd. The pups treated the pd like another coyote, rough-housing with it instead of killing it. This would go on for several chases and captures.

Finally, the mother snapped an unfortunate pd's neck with a bite. After a moments hesitation the pups joined in. The next chase and capture was more to the mother's liking.

I kept thinking the prairie dogs would go to ground and stay there but several didn't.

I also remember thinking I really needed a camera with me.

Not because I like the kill but how many people get to see a mother coyote train her pups?

We see nature programs on TV but seldom do people get to see nature in real life.

It can be brutal to watch.

8. I was living in Colorado Springs at the time.

There is (or was) a very large prairie dog colony not too far from my house. Awesome little critters to watch. I didn't carry a camera with me at the time.
