Evgen Bavcar, the blind photographer.
Its amazing sometimes, the amount of skill and versatility displayed by the visually challenged. Especially when theyre able to do certain things better than those with perfect vision. Photography, for instance.
If youre wondering how it could ever be possible that a blind man take photographs, Evgen Bavcar has gone and done just that. In fact, he is a noted photographer, with his works being published and exhibited around the world. Bavcar, who was born in a small Slovenian town near Venice in 1946, met with two consecutive accidents that completely robbed him of his sight. This, before he even reached the age of twelve. Around four years after this incident, he happened to have access to a camera for the very first time. The first snap he ever took, was of a girl he loved. It was then that Bavcar realized that I secretly discovered I could possess something that I could not see
Going beyond the physical limits of his blindness to investigate aspects of the visible reaching a sublime poetry. This is the never-ending challenge of Evgen Bavcar, a unique figure in the international photography scene of which he's one of the most respected representatives, despite having been visually-impaired since the age of 12. Thanks to the author's profound sensitivity, that guides him through memories and impressions evoked by the surrounding world, the images reach high levels of intimate beauty, creating dreamy and exciting "visions of the soul".
To those who wonder how Bavcar can succeed in taking photographs, he answers "You don't have to ask me how, but why I shoot photos. I shoot in relation to noises, smells and especially in relation to the way I experience light. I then proceed to choose the images having friends advise me, free from personal obsessions".
The originals are inside my head. It is a matter of creating a mental image, the physical record which best represents the work of what is imagined
I know there are always things that escape me, but thats true of photographers who can physically see. My images are fragile; Ive never seen them, but I know they exist, and some of them have touched me deeply.
And once these images are taken? I pick my photos on a contact sheet the same way as everyone else does, the only exception being that I have to control the physical gaze of those who serve as mediators between the contacts and my own inner reality. Obviously, theyre quite talented as well.
