Related: About this forumI just got back from a trip to California
I attended my first photo workshop at the Salton Sea. From wikipedia:
...
The modern sea was accidentally created by the engineers of the California Development Company in 1905. In an effort to increase water flow into the area for farming, irrigation canals were dug from the Colorado River into the valley. Due to fears of silt buildup, a cut was made in the bank of the Colorado River to further increase the water flow. The resulting outflow overwhelmed the engineered canal, and the river flowed into the Salton Basin for two years, filling the historic dry lake bed and creating the modern sea, before repairs were completed.[2] While it varies in dimensions and area with fluctuations in agricultural runoff and rainfall, the Salton Sea averages 15 miles (24 km) by 35 miles (56 km). With an estimated surface area of 343 square miles (890 km2) or 350 square miles (910 km2), the Salton Sea is the largest lake in California.[3][4] The average annual inflow is less than 1,200,000 acre feet (1,500,000 dam3), which is enough to maintain a maximum depth of 44 feet (13 m) and a total volume of about 6,000,000 acre feet (7,400,000 dam3). However, due to changes in water apportionments agreed upon for the Colorado River under the Quantification Settlement Agreement of 2003, the overall water level of the Sea is expected to decrease significantly between 2013 and 2021.[5]
The lake's salinity, about 54 g/L, is greater than that of the waters of the Pacific Ocean (35 g/L), but less than that of the Great Salt Lake (which ranges from 50 to 270 g/L). The concentration increases by about 1% every year.

Here are a few from the trip... I took so many images yet had so few keepers. Need to improve on the ratio.
Day 1:
Came across a squadron of pelicans.
Then did some sunset shooting
Then sunset turned into night
Day 2:
Of course I had to photograph something abandoned
Then I found a kitty and we bonded a bit
Then we had some free time, so we hunted down this landscape
Then we had another sunset
And that sunset turned into another night shoot
Day 3:
I haven't processed those yet... but there was more abandoned stuff on day 3.
It was a fun (and affordable) workshop and an interesting area to photograph. It was my first trip to the west coast (prior to that, Kansas was the furthest west I'd been) and I wasn't prepared for the desert heat and how bright the sun is off the salt flats but I learned a lot and made some new friends.

(149,627 posts)I especially liked the sunset pics and the into night ones.
Well done!
I look forward to seeing more.
Next time you come out to California, come on out to the coast......we have a lot of great sights out here too.

(14,040 posts)I was expecting a max of 70 degrees during the day but it was close to 90 all three days (better than the East Coast but still, it's hot in the desert!).
I came away not entirely impressed with California (did I mention it was hot!) but I keep telling myself I can't judge a very large state on a very small area.
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,627 posts)Also, the humidity is somewhat higher so you don't feel as though your skin will flake off!
The Salton Sea area is NOT typical of California.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)but almost any day during the winter down there can hit the mid-80's and near 90 in the winter is not unheard of.
I wouldn't judge all of California by the Imperial Valley and even less by the Salton Sea, which isn't even a natural feature.
California has a few deserts and the Imperial Valley is probably the least scenic of them. There's Coachella Valley, the Mojave Desert, the high desert that straddles the border of far Northern California and Northern Nevada, and all these are really beautiful in their own desert way.
I also hope you'll come to California again, because I'd love to see the photos you could produce in other parts of the state! Because I really like this set!

(130,959 posts)Some in there would be suitable for February contest that ends today. Topic: Keep it SIMPLE!!!

(14,040 posts)I made an entry for the contest. I'm sure it'll be recognizable because of this post... so much for anonymity.

(9,314 posts)executed photographs. The compositions and exposures are superb. I particularly like the third one down and the black and white landscape.
Do tell more about the workshop please.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)The workshop is run by Keith Skelton of California Photography Workshops. He knows the area well and has several different workshops. He's a heck of a nice guy too, so that helps and he actually instructs instead of having other photographers pay for his personal photography trip (I've heard stories of this happening).
And since you asked, I'll post the link so you don't have to hunt it down. I didn't want to come across as an advertisement for Keith when I initially posted.

(9,314 posts)and can walk and hold my camera I want to take a workshop and a trip out west - probably for the last time.
I appreciate all the info and again, congratulations on professional grade photographs. I took 4 semesters of photography and can't always get what I want, but I learned enough to know outstanding photography when I see it.
ohheckyeah
(9,314 posts)the Salton Sea. It was about 20 years ago. There was a small one hitching post town that sold tee shirts in the one store that said "where the hell is ......" but I can't remember the name of the town. Do you know what I'm talking about?
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)But I didn't see anything like that. We were pretty exclusively in and around the Salton Sea and there wasn't a heck of a lot of "tourist" attractions to speak of.
Let's see... I was at Palm Springs, Brawley, Mecca Beach, Niland, Calipatria, Bombay Beach, Salton City, Salton Sea Beach, Desert Shores, Salvation Mountain, Slab City and East Jesus--we were very, very busy. From what I understand from the instructor, there were things that were there last December that weren't there in February. The place is forever in flux.
ohheckyeah
(9,314 posts)Niland. Here is the old store.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)Of course, there's an identical block of stores across the street so I could have it wrong.
That's a great image!
ohheckyeah
(9,314 posts)image. It could be the same block -=it was pretty rough when I was there but it was interesting.

You certainly did it justice!

(14,040 posts)And for me that's when it's first falling into disrepair.
Thank you, BTW.

(7,809 posts)I live in the Mojave Desert but I come from Michigan originally. The scenery here out west has a drama to it. It sounds like the workshop was a great experience.
Thanks.

(14,040 posts)I don't know how you stand the desert... This pale skinned woman is not cut out for the heat.
Leith
(7,809 posts)I'm so light skinned that I glow in the dark so I stay out of the sunlight. When I do go out, a lightweight longsleeve shirt is the way to go. And, of course, sunglasses. But I made a vow when I moved here: I will never shovel a driveway or scrape ice off a car again in my life. So far, so good.

(9,298 posts)and great for us because we get to see some incredibly beautiful photos. Thank you so much for posting them.

(14,040 posts)I'm quite an introvert, so the was the hardest aspect of the workshop for me (being around people ALL.THE.TIME!) but we were with a great group of people and I was actually there with some members of my local photo group I go out with. I'm glad you like the images.

(3,208 posts)Love how the trees and shore line look like bright day light, but the stars are shining in the night sky.
And you caught that kitty laughing!
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)She never fully opened her eyes. I hope it's because it was so bright there and not a health issue. She helped ease my separation anxiety from my own kitties.
Thanks!

(20,886 posts)Such a desolate place. A wonderful place to shoot. Love the pelicans.

(584 posts)To have one keeper from a shoot is great, you had more than that, you should be very pleased with the results.
I've been to the Salton Sea one time, photographing California for the Dept. of Agriculture. Even though I was in a plane a mile and a half in the air, it was June and VERY hot.
Again, great work

Isn't the Salton Sea one of the most bizarre places you've ever been? We're about an hour away and head down there sometimes when we want a change of scenery. It's a great place to watch birds, too, if you can get a little upwind of the dead fish odor.
I have a friend who works with some agencies that are trying to have it restored but who knows what the future of the Salton Sea will be.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)Particularly East Jesus.
It would be nice to see it restored because as I understand it, Salton Sea is the only Wetland left in the state of California. I know there are agencies that no longer want water diverted for the purpose of keeping it full. Of course, they aren't thinking about all the salt and such flying all over when there's a dust storm. Ick!

(45,319 posts)"According to the State of the States Wetland, there are approximately 2.9 million acres of wetlands in California today. Although vast, this represents only 10% of the estimated historical extent of wetlands. The numbers in the graph are from a more recent estimate of modern wetlands that uses new data. This estimate sets the total to about 3.8 million acres of wetlands, which is about one million more than the previous number, yet still less than 20% of the historic wetland extent."

(51,564 posts)I haven't been to the Salton Sea In 15 years. I imagine the bird poop smell and condition of the water has only gotten worse.

(14,040 posts)I didn't notice the bird poop smell but there was a rotting smell that couldn't be overlooked.
