(149,620 posts)Do I detect a light hand with HDR? Nicely done!
These are beautiful.

(19,459 posts)No, no HDR on these. I did part of the processing in NIK SilverEfex Pro, which has some nice pre-sets for b&w.

(22,380 posts)is making me sigh. It is a treat to get to see it, and makes me want to pull out brushes and oil paint.

(19,459 posts)I'm liking b&w more all the time.

(20,886 posts)I like the trees especially.
That texture reminds me of the old mezzotints.

(19,459 posts)Does the image seem gray on your monitor, or does it have a light sepia cast?
I tried to calibrate the monitor on my laptop...

(20,886 posts)The top one more than the second one. The other two, if you look closely, are warm, but very subtle.

(19,459 posts)They look blue on Kim's Toshiba, so maybe I ought to see what I can screw up there.

(86,616 posts)I have been looking at texture in snowy landscapes lately... regardless of the season trees and shrubs are great for texture.
Was just out today, grey with sunny holes through some clouds and frosty trees.
Those are really nice B&Ws.

(19,459 posts)I do like b&w. Really wanting to take a photo class at the local JC.

(86,616 posts)you know what to shoot and that is yooge. The way you make use of it is nice, keep it up. Might inspire me to use it more. I learned photography in B&W a long time ago but seem to have been smitten by color in digital, especially macros of flowers.
But I think that, in this group, I'm probably in the not very experienced part of the scale. I have two rudimentary cameras that, I think, serve me well and I'm good with that for now. i use the very limited software that came with one of the cameras, the editing they have on photobucket and the same for the editing tools in the Windows slide show editing mode.

(19,459 posts)All the images you post are really nice. Those moose images you posted in pinebox's intro OP were lovely. I rarely get that kind of clarity in my images. I think a class might help me really learn the ISO/A/S combinations required for being flexible. And, of course, understanding what my camera/lens combos are capable of in the right hands.
I'm pretty late to the game; I've enjoyed taking snapshots for years, but only recently tried to formally understand what's happening.

(86,616 posts)I have had early training but technology has managed to get many steps ahead of me since I am a sporadic participant. I think I should have put those photos elsewhere but I am glad you liked them. I was impressed with how they came out, my little camera was a good choice for a novice... the rest is just luck. I happen to live in a place where it doesn't take a whole lot to get lucky though so there's that.
Heads up, before you go, I just posted a poll for themes regarding the Feb photo contest. I have to go to a job interview a couple hundred miles from here on Monday and might be gone a few days myself but I'll be checking in and managing the process during that time.
