THE DESERT SPEAKS is an Emmy Award-winning series focusing on desert regions around the world hosted by David Yetman. Much more than a nature documentary, For 19 years, THE DESERT SPEAKS has taken viewers on bold explorations around the world. The series presents stories about the people, cultures, plants, animals and geological features encountered on travel adventures in deserts near and far away.
Host David Yetman is a research scientist at the University of Arizona's Southwest Center. The epitome of a "desert rat," Yetman has lived in the Southwest for nearly 50 years. He is a nationally known author and accomplished photographer who specializes in the plants, geography and people of northwestern Mexico. Using boats, bikes, goats and burros, Yetman takes viewers from the Grand Canyon to the Galapagos Islands, bringing his enthusiasm, energy and knowledge to the series.

Episode 1 - Argentina's Upside-Down Desert (Part 1)
In this season premiere, host David Yetman takes viewers on a journey through the city of Buenos Aires en route to the Andes in search of the dry desert of northwest Argentina. In Buenos Aires, locals lead the way through quaint city streets and pavilions, sharing the history of this city. After a quick stop at a local farmers' market for provisions, the journey up the Andes begins. Along the way, trek through a tropical rainforest, catch glimpses of columnar cacti and learn about the history of an archeological site that predates the Incas.

(36,269 posts)... very interesting, but i didn't remember the correct name of the show. I would have thought there weren't that many interesting topics to cover re. the desert, but there were plenty ! I first learned about the rescue of Madjool dates from extinction and the influence of mammoths on the growth of desert palms from this series. I also learned about the bizarre dynamite tree, which produces explosive seed pods, from this show.
Yetman is now doing a series "in the Americas" which is interesting as well -- it's showing on AL Public Television. Recently saw a show which featured the whistled language of the Chinantec people of Oaxaca. Previously Silbo was the only whistled language I had heard of.

(2,016 posts)"The Desert Speaks" on PBS. I keep looking for reruns, but now he's moved on to "In the Americas" (which is also cool).
I live in the Mojave, and after watching Yetman's interpretation, I see my backyard differently.
