Lawmaker kills bill to raise tobacco purchase age to 21 in Arizona
A bill to raise the age for tobacco sales to 21 has burned out at the state Capitol.
The measure, House Bill 2335, needed a hearing in the House Commerce Committee to advance. But committee chairman Rep. Jeff Weninger, R-Chandler, said he won't hear the bill because he believes it puts an unnecessary restriction on 18-year-olds. The current legal age is 18.
While cautioning that he's not a proponent of smoking, Weninger said it came down to a matter of treating an adult like an adult.
"If someone is a legal adult and can serve their country in the armed forces, then I believe they can decide whether or not to smoke," Weninger said in a text message. He was unavailable for an interview because lawmakers were tied up with voting on bills.
