Gov. Doug Ducey will support extending education tax

The governor who has vowed to cut taxes every year he's in office now says he's open to extending a current sales tax that helps fund education — and possibly to increasing it.

Gov. Doug Ducey said he didn't work hard to pass the Proposition 123 education funding proposal to "let us fall off a cliff" when the education sales tax Prop. 301 expires in 2021. The sales tax currently brings in about $600 million a year to education.

“So of course we’re going to work to make sure that we’re going to put more money into K-12 education every year I’m governor — I said this in my State of the State,” he told The Arizona Republic on Tuesday night.

Ducey said he will work with education leaders to develop a new Prop. 301 proposal to take to the voters.
