https://gma.yahoo.com/tuna-crabs-invade-san-diego-beaches-thousands-185916850--abc-news-topstories.htmlThousands of tuna crabs have invaded the beaches of San Diego Bay.
The thumb-sized crustaceans started washing ashore further up the California coast earlier this year, but turned up this week in San Diego in unusually larger numbers, officials said.
Theyve washed ashore periodically over the years because of any number of natural effects, but research scientist Michael Shane of the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute in San Diego cited El Nino as the phenomenon that might have pushed the crabs up from their normal habitat far offshore....
The crabs start to die because the local waters are much cooler, Shane told ABC News today. Local animals have begun to eat the crabs and they have been found in the gut contents of sea lions, fish, and birds.

Not Dungeness by any means, but maybe they could make them into cioppino.

Never heard of them. Thanks for posting.

, or "thumb-size" refers to the center part of the crab minus the claws.

(25,348 posts)6. Must be my perception. I'm used to seeing large crabs here in Flor-i-da...
...which are about the size of my foot. (11 1/2)

...some little tiny wooden hammers and little tiny butter dishes.

on O.C. beaches during the '82-83 El Nino - maybe a good omen!
