Is the state holding your money? Find out online!

Search page on CA State Controller's site:
https://ucpi.sco.ca.gov/UCP/

If a business owes you money that you have not claimed, they will sometimes transfer it to the state for "safekeeping" until you claim it. You should get a letter saying they have unclaimed property of yours. I'm just going through some old mail and found one from the state controller telling me they have some of my unclaimed property.

I'm claiming about $225 of insurance premium refunds and AT&T rebates that I don't remember ever receiving checks for, but I might have. Anyway, the state has it so I should be able to get it now.

You're supposed to be able to file the claim online but all of mine have to be mailed in for some reason. I don't know why.

Check it out! You may find a little surprise waiting for you.

A few years back I sent the link to my mom and she was able to collect a few hundred dollars that had been owed to my late grandmother. Nothing dramatic, a small amount of money that was left in a closed bank account, some utility deposits. The paperwork to retrieve it wasn't much- just the death certificate, I think.

edit: Oooh, somebody owes me sixty five cents!
