Five safe after whale damages boat near Pescadero

(05-24) 20:08 PDT Pescadero -- A whale hit a pleasure boat off Pescadero on Saturday afternoon, leaving the disabled craft adrift toward rocky coastline before the five people managed to get ashore and call 911, authorities said.

San Mateo sheriff's officials got a call at 2:40 p.m. from people who had abandoned the damaged craft. They said the engine had failed after running into the whale about 10 miles off the coast and warned that their abandoned boat was taking on water and being driven toward the rocky coast by high winds, said Sheriff's Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt.

No one was injured.

Deputies rushed to protect the vessel from further damage and keep its 40 gallons of fuel from leaking into the protected marine area.

The whale didn't damage the boat, the operator of the boat damaged it by running it into a whale.

I am pretty sure the whale had right-of-way.
