UC to consider raising tuition each year for five years

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/UC-to-consider-5-percent-tuition-hikes-for-5-years-5875748.php

University of California regents will consider raising student tuition for the first time in three years at this month’s meeting. But instead of the sky-high hikes that have led to angry student protests, the idea is for steady increases of up to 5 percent a year for five years starting next fall.

If approved, the proposal could jeopardize funding increases promised by Gov. Jerry Brown in exchange for UC’s commitment to keep tuition at 2011-12 levels. UC has already received two years of 5 percent funding increases, including this year, and expects to receive 4 percent increases for the next two years through 2016-17 as part of Brown’s promise.

“The governor has been pleased to maintain his commitment by providing those year-over-year increases. We hope to be able to continue that,” said H.D. Palmer, spokesman for Brown’s Department of Finance. “The conditions of the commitment have been clear from the outset,” Palmer said, referring to the flat tuition....

Current yearly tuition for in-state undergraduates is $12,192 — twice the price in 2006. A 5 percent hike of $612 would bring next year’s tuition to $12,804. Additional mandatory fees of more than $1,000 would bring the new annual price tag to the $14,000 range next year.

(at least that's what I'm paying). Add in books, rent ($700/mo for her share of a tiny off campus apartment), utilities, insurance, and food, and I'm shelling out about 23K. Thank God this is only a 4 year stint and my daughter has a good part-time job to help out. I'm a substitute teacher currently making $110/day when I work. College is being paid for largely out of my husband's savings accumulated over a lifetime. Paying any more will be a big stretch for me and way beyond the means of many.

days? As a matter-of-fact the state college system and community colleges were also tuition free. We could do it back then because we made rich people pay their fair share of taxes on their property wealth. Maybe we can't take away Prop. 13 but IMHO businesses benefit from an educated work force. Since California is full of wealthy, large global and national corporations making lots of money for Wall Street, billions, even trillions if we really counted up, it's time to tax them on their profits and assets and put that money into making our schools and universities free again.
