Twitterloin: not a San Francisco neighborhood (we hope)

http://blog.sfgate.com/stew/2015/01/08/twitterloin-not-a-san-francisco-neighborhood-we-hope/

That’s right: Twitterloin.

It turns out the story, which is about artists who call the Tenderloin home because of its relatively affordable rent, has little to do with Twitter. It only mentions the company twice and describes it as “alongside the impoverished neighborhood.”

Nonetheless, San Francisco’s social media feathers were collective ruffled that the Gray Lady would attempt to bestow a nickname on a neighborhood 3,000 miles away.

But despite those aghast at the temerity of the Times to label our very, very sacred neighborhood, it turns out they did not create the newly hated moniker. The first utterance of Twitterloin on Twitter itself came in 2009 from the Gray Area foundation for the arts.
