Democrats Propose Tax Break For New College Graduates Who Stay in Connecticut
Democrats proposed a special tax break for future college graduates Friday in an attempt to keep them in Connecticut and help revitalize the state's economy.
The credit on the state income tax would be available to graduates who live in Connecticut who received an associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree after January 2018.
Students who graduated after two years of community college would be eligible for the credit, which would extend for a maximum of five consecutive years. The student must live and be employed in the state, but those who already received their degree before 2018 would not be eligible.
House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, who is strongly pushing the proposal, said, "It's important that we work with our young people after they complete their degrees to keep them here, and making our state a little more affordable is an important part of that.''
