St. Pete Mayor Bill Foster extends same-sex benefits for city employees

According to Bay News 9's partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, Foster said the move was ''the right thing to do.''

The move came a day after President Barack Obama endorsed same-sex marriage nationally.

Foster downplayed the decision, saying it was just a case in which he needed to treat all employees the same.

Police officers and fire department administrators already received those benefits as part of their contract with the city.

Now the benefits will apply to all city employees.

This is somewhat surprising since Bill Foster is a Republican.
