Athens joins cities hosting women's rights marches

Hundreds of people marched around the Athena statue in front of The Classic Center in downtown Athens on Saturday afternoon, in a hastily arranged rally allowing Athens to join dozens of cities in this country and around the world that hosted women’s rights marches throughout the day, many of which attracted hundreds of thousands of people.

“We want a leader, not a creepy tweeter,” the marchers chanted briefly during the march, noting the fact that the rally came the day after Donald Trump, notorious for his use of the Twitter social media platform and for some coarse language about women, was inaugurated as the nation’s 45th president

Vandenberg attended the rally with a group of friends who got word of the event through social media or other informal channels. One of those friends, Margie Siggelkow, was at the rally in part to express concern about the election of Trump, a sentiment that figured into the tone of other women’s marches around the country.
