Teachers union, school board still in talks as strike deadline nears in Chicago Public Schools
Negotiators for the Chicago Board of Education and the teachers union continued to work toward a new contract Monday night ahead of a midnight strike deadline.
The two sides were going over what one source described as "nitty-gritty details," a source said. The Chicago Teachers Union planned a 10 p.m. Monday news conference and said negotiations could continue until midnight.
If there is a strike, it would mark the second time in four years the union has shut down the city's schools under Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
The union on Twitter early Monday evening reiterated its demand for more money for schools from special taxing districts. A source said Emanuel was prepared to offer more money from those districts to sweeten the pot, but it was unclear how much money he would direct to schools.
