Dubuque Kmart closing

End of an era here in Dubuque

Kmart stores in Dubuque and Platteville, Wis., are set to close in the next few months, according to a list obtained by the Telegraph Herald.

The Dubuque retail store, 2600 Dodge St., is on a list of 78 stores marked for closure in the next few months. The list also includes the store located on U.S. 151 in Platteville.

The pharmacy in Dubuque’s Kmart closed Dec. 1. Officials from Sears Holdings Corp., Kmart’s parent company, said at the time that the Dubuque store would remain open.

"Store-closing sales" are set to begin Friday, Jan. 6, according to a spreadsheet dated today. The estimated store-closing date of the Dubuque location is March 26, and the Platteville store is set to close March 19.

If this is true it's a shame, but I think it's been coming for a while. The Dubuque Kmart never seemed all that busy anymore and it seemed like the store has been declining for a while now. If memory serves the Dubuque store was the first one opened here in Iowa about 50 years ago, and was the first store open on Sundays around here too. (Mom said that really pissed off some of the old time Catholics).

They put a Hobby Lobby in its place, but everyone I know boycotts Hobby Lobby, so I expect it will ultimately fold. I shopped at KMart a lot and was really sorry when it closed down. It was my go-to place for cleaning products, Christmas lights (sometimes ornaments), kitchen utensils, flashlights, etc. I was sorry when it closed. I know the CEO of Sears is more or less intentionally running both places into the ground.

What are we going to do when there's no retail left? I absolutely don't want to do my shopping online, yet I increasingly feel that one day I'll be forced to. Downtown Seattle is turning into a shopping desert (as is downtown NYC for that matter, and probably some other places).

along with Sears.

Their CEO is a real piece of work. He has used GOP economics and management style to pretty much gut the company.

There is one Sears but it doesn't seem very busy. A couple of years ago, I went into a Kmart a couple of miles from my house and it seemed like they wanted it to shut down. Lousy service, dirty conditions, merchandise disorganized. And a Walmart had just opened across the street. And it was (and is) always busy. Adios Kmart.

Not that I would go out of my way to go all the way down there when I do visit the Quads.
