Iowa uneasy over Trump's proposed imports tax on Mexico

Iowans' fears that President Donald Trump could incite an international trade war were heightened Thursday when the he floated a plan to pay for a proposed wall along the Mexican border with a 20 percent tax on imports.

Experts warn such a move could ripple through Iowa's economy, prompting Mexico and other countries hit with the tax to retaliate against local firms that export products internationally — a prospect that is particularly daunting for Iowa ag producers and manufacturers.

Next to Canada, Mexico is Iowa's second largest export market.

"There will be a tit-for-tat reaction," said Iowa State University Economist Peter Orazem. "Mexico is our second biggest customer, so I don’t think that’s good."

Wonder how all those voters feel now. They were all so tired of having to be politically correct and you know, emails.

US companies in every state depend on products from Mexico. Look inside your car sometime and check out the parts made in Mexico. The guy is the proverbial bull in the China shop.

"Iowa" is not uneasy. What a gross over-generalization. One or two ISU economists do not speak for Iowa. I bet 10 to 1 that if you go downtown to the cafe in Hicktown, Iowa, 9 out of 10 of the people sitting in there will favor anything tht sounds remotely punitive to someone else, especially Mexico.

We have got to stop shitting ourselves about the reality in most of these places. They are NOT the progressive-leaning bastions of reason that we wish they might be. And if we don't wake the hell up and challenge the thinking of these these hunyocks, we're on the path to becoming Alabama.
