On December 4, 1858, Chester Greenwood, inventor of the earmuff, was born.

A reply to 2022's post said that his birthday is celebrated in Farmington, Maine. So here we are.

Inventor Chester Greenwood was #BornOnThisDay, Dec. 4, 1858. Invented the earmuff (1873) age (15), patented a tea kettle, variation of the steel-toothed rake, an advertising matchbox + many other items & was a supporter of woman suffrage. Passed in 1937 (age 78) #RIP #BOTD #hunk

Gawd it must have been cold back in the firewood days. Were log cabins even 50 degrees? And how did you heat a mansion? Loads of labor and firewood. No wonder coal caught on. Labor and soot.

Some young punk named bluedigger won the youth division of a three mile road race around downtown Farmington, and almost fell on his ass multiple times, rounding every corner in the snow and ice. In later years we got national news coverage, but I was off to college by then. My hometown.
