Seth Moulton suggests taxes on marijuana should be 'dramatically' increased
Bay State Congressman Seth Moulton suggested the newly enacted state marijuana law that legalized recreational use of the drug needs to be significantly taxed during an interview on Boston Herald Radio's "Morning Meeting" show.
"There's a lot that the state legislature needs to do," said Moulton of the new marijuana law, a backer of the legalization movement. "My whole reason for endorsing this was that we've got to bring marijuana out of the shadows and actually regulate it. That's up to the state legislature. So I think this is an important step in the right direction. Because, let's not kid ourselves, people were getting access to marijuana today and they were getting access to it yesterday as well."
Moulton said the state legislature should "dramatically raise the taxes" on recreational marijuana. The sale of marijuana in retail stores is not expected to begin until 2018, at which point the state will employ a 3.75 percent excise tax on marijuana sales, coupled with a local municipality tax that is not to be more than 2 percent, in addition to the state's regular sales tax.
