Gipson passes revived domestic abuse bill
JACKSON – House Judiciary B Chair Andy Gipson, R-Braxton, who has faced criticism in recent days for killing legislation that would make domestic violence grounds for divorce, has revived a version of the legislation.
Gipson, a Baptist minister, was able to amend a bill dealing with making technical changes to the laws surrounding abused children to add spousal abuse as a grounds for divorce.
The proposal, passed Monday, now goes back to the Senate where members can accept the House bill and send it to Gov. Phil Bryant or invite negotiations.
Gipson came under fire last week for killing similar legislation in the Judiciary B Committee he chairs by not calling it up for consideration on a deadline day. At the time, he said the legislation was not needed because, based on rulings of the state Supreme Court, domestic abuse is included as a grounds for divorce under the “habitual cruel and inhuman treatment” provision.
