BREAKING NEWS: Four police officers down: Police are talking with suspect

This kind of shit does not happen in NH as a matter of routine:

GREENLAND — Police are currently speaking with an alleged suspect after at least one, possibly three, officers were shot this evening.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. police broadcasts indicated up to four officers may be down in the area of Post Road near Breakfast Hill Road.

From the scene Foster's staff says three officers were shot and one was down in the middle of a nearby road and a police broadcast said the Greenland Police Chief was en route to the Portsmouth Hospital.

Seacoastonline.com reports the incident is believed to be occuring at 517 Post Road, saying a neighbor heard gunshots fired and saw police run from the house. She believed it was a drug bust "gone bad."

Fla. shooting has some reassessing N.H. deadly force law
By Doug Ireland

Some say the recent slaying of a Florida teenager is further evidence why the Granite State's recently expanded deadly force law should be repealed....

The shooting has raised questions and concerns among some lawmakers and police officials here about the state's relatively new expanded deadly force law....

New Hampshire's law allows an individual to use deadly force not only to protect him or herself, but also a third party and gives that person civil immunity for using force, under certain circumstances. ...

The Granite State's law was based on Florida's...

This is straight off the telly ticker, so no link, sorry:

NH state police and Portsmouth SWAT team have evacuated homes within a twelve mile radius.

There are reports that multiple police officers have been shot in Greenland.

Greenland police chief Michael Maloney is among them.

The shooting followed a drug raid on a home on Glen Post Rd. Gunman is still inside home.

no word on who the others who were shot are.

Some reports say that the shooter is Cullen Mutrie, who had been arrested previously for possession of anabolic steroids.

The news said that four others had been shot, but the Greenfield police is only seven officers, so some of the others might have been from surrounding towns (Exeter or others) who were participating in the operation.

The poor Chief was slated to retire NEXT WEEK. That's just awful.

The local news is saying that the shooter guy is roid raging, and may not even be in the house (helo up above with IR night vision looking for him).

They were telling people to stay indoors and lock their doors.

They are putting the injured people's names on TV, now. One of them is out of surgery and another is still in surgery. They were from surrounding PDs, not the town one.

Early Friday morning, Attorney General Michael Delaney released information about the other four officers who were injured:
Detective Gregory Turner, 32, a six-year veteran of the Dover Police Department, was treated and released after gunshot wound to shoulder.
Detective Eric Kulberg, 31, of the University of New Hampshire police, was treated and released after a gunshot wound to the arm.
Detective Scott Kukesh, 33, a 10-year veteran with the Newmarket Police Department, was in the intensive care unit with a bullet wound to the chest. He was waiting for surgery.
Detective Jeremiah Murphy, 34, a seven-year veteran of the Rochester Police Department, was in the intensive care unit after surgery for a gunshot wound to chest.

They've cancelled school tomorrow because they are using the school as a command post. The telly said that the guy is, in fact, still in the house and has a "female companion" with him. The governor has been on the scene as well this past evening.

This is just a drug nut with roid rage--it's not really a "national" story. It is unusual because this kind of thing doesn't happen in small town New England. The human interest aspect--the poor chief getting killed a week before retirement--is sad, but this will not hold the nation's attention. Once the guy is arrested or killed, that will draw a line under the story. The chief's funeral will likely be covered and aired on TV in northern NE, anyway.

The police helicopter -- which had been flying "dark" w/ no lights on -- has switched on its lights and can be seen now.

14. Update: Killer found dead
Fri Apr 13, 2012, 09:35 AM
Apr 2012
A shooter who police say wounded four officers and killed Police Chief Michael Maloney was found dead in a Post Road home early Friday morning.

New Hampshire Attorney General Mike Delaney announced that the bodies of Cullen Mutrie and an unidentified woman were discovered in the home by a police robot sent inside by a SWAT team. Details about their causes of death were not immediately released.

http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20120413-NEWS-120419873

A Greenland man who once recanted his guilty pleas to bar-fight assault charges now faces nine felonies alleging he was in possession of anabolic steroids.

Police allege liquid and powder steroids were found in the home of Cullen Mutrie, 28, of 517 Post Road, when officers went there to confiscate guns after Mutrie's arrest on charges alleging domestic assault. According to an affidavit by Officer Wayne Young, the steroids were found in Mutrie's living room coffee table on July 24, 2010, but were not verified as steroids by the state crime lab until Jan. 18.

It's certainly an angle to the story which should be mentioned, but the media here gets pretty dazzled by stories like this, and they would not want to hint at something that implied error or carelessness on the part of the victims.

On edit - at least I think the man who died was shot in the chest; could be wrong about that.
