Lilly Ledbetter to join city workers for gender-pay rally

A national icon for equal pay is getting involved in a dispute over whether the city paid less to female school-safety agents.
Lilly Ledbetter, the namesake of the national Fair Pay Act that was passed in 2009, is expected to attend a rally on Friday on the steps of City Hall to call attention to a federal class action lawsuit against the city demanding parity in wages.
"This is the largest pay-equity lawsuit in the United States today, and Lilly Ledbetter is the poster person for the Equal Pay Act," Teamsters Local 237 president Gregory Floyd told Capital in an interview. "The bill is actually named after her. We want to bring national attention to our problem."
He said he expects several hundred people, mostly city workers, to attend the protest, including New York chapters of the League of Women Voters and the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.)
