Senate passes bill to create violent felons registry

By TANIQUE WILLIAMS
The Senate has passed a bill (S.1850-b) to create a public database of violent felons similar to the state's sex offender registry. Lawmakers are now pressing for passage in the Assembly where the bill has been stalled since 2011.

The bill known as Brittany's Law — or the Domestic Violence Protection Act — would require all individuals convicted of a violent felony to register with the state Department of Crimial Justice Services upon discharge, parole or release from any state or local facility, hospital or institution.

The Assembly version (A.8916) is sponsored by Aileen Gunther, D-Forestburgh, and cosponsored by Brian Kolb, R-Canandaigua. The bill is sponsored by in the Senate by Michael Nozzolio, R-Fayette, and has 18 co-sponsors.
