The unmaking of a LICH deal

Dan Goldberg

Last Thursday, hours after representatives of The Peebles Corporation told a Brooklyn judge they were about to reach a deal with SUNY to purchase Long Island College Hospital, it all began to unravel.

As of today, the fate of the troubled, state-run Cobble Hill hospital remains unresolved.

Emails obtained by Capital show the quick dissolution of a seemingly close agreement and underscore how difficult it has been for SUNY to sell the hospital it claims has lost them hundreds of millions of dollars.

Peebles last night demanded that SUNY, the state entity that runs the hospital, return to the negotiating table. But that appears unlikely, since talks have already begun with another bidder, Fortis Property Group, which indicated it is more willing to abide by SUNY's terms.
