New access signs lean forward

Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation, previously passed, that calls for the eventual changeover in disability access signs. They are going from the old icon of a person sitting upright in a wheelchair to a person leaning forward, pushing the wheelchair at what could be a good clip.

It’s a symbolic change to be sure, but those in the disability community say it’s in keeping with the long term movement toward integrating people with disabilities into society as much as possible.

There are, of course, lots of athletes with disabilities such as those who bring their wheelchairs onto basketball courts, road races and other activities.
