Latrice Walker, a Democratic candidate for an open Brooklyn Assembly seat, scored the endorsement of Public Advocate Letitia James this morning.

The endorsement comes as little surprise in the competitive Brownsville race–Ms. Walker served as treasurer on Ms. James’ successful 2013 campaign for public advocate.

The Working Families Party has endorsed Rubain Dorancy to take Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams’ former State Senate seat.

The union-backed third party said it was supporting Mr. Dorancy over rival Jesse Hamilton–a former aide to Mr. Adams once seen as his heir apparent–because of what they described as his liberal bona fides.

12. NYLCV Taps Avella as Pre-Primary ‘Top Priority’
Mon Aug 25, 2014, 12:01 PM
Aug 2014

Liz Benjamin

As he faces a tough primary challenge from former NYC Comptroller John Liu, Sen. Tony Avella has picked up the support of the New York League of Conservation Voters, which today will name the Queens senator its top priority candidate in advance of the Sept. 9 election.

In an email to its members, the NYLCV touted Avella’s “tireless work” on some of the organization’s key agenda items, like getting toxic chemicals out of children’s products, promoting clean energy and protecting clean drinking water.

“Whether he was leading the charge on the Child Safe Products Act, or making sure regulations are in place that will safeguard our drinking water from hydraulic fracturing, Tony has kept the environment a top issue in the Senate,” the email states.

15. The Strange Fate of Kim's Video
Mon Aug 25, 2014, 12:53 PM
Aug 2014

Karina Longworth

From 1995 until January 2009, a music and movie megastore called Mondo Kim’s took up the bulk of a five-story building at 6 St. Marks Place in the East Village. The top floor was rented out as apartments, and the fourth floor was used by Yongman Kim—the owner of the building and of Mondo Kim’s—as office space. The third floor held what was widely considered to be the best, most diverse video-rental collection in New York City.

And then there was a basement, a dank, moldy, low-ceilinged space. At some point—around the summer of 2007, according to former employees—Kim had the idea to turn this basement into a dungeon.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer on his homeless childhood, calls for residents to be part of the solution

JIMMY VAN BRAMER

A young father enters a colorless room holding his infant son while his wife sits nearby trying to believe this isn’t happening. Their older kids, not much older than the infant, stay close. They are all tired and they are all homeless. The father tells the intake worker that they had been staying with friends but had to leave and now have nowhere else to turn. He asks for help because they have no money and his baby son just needs a bottle of milk.

The father is 25, it is 1970 in New York City, and I am that baby boy.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said today that he and his administration would take the blame for the recent security breakdowns on the Brooklyn Bridge.

After another man was able to scale the city’s most famous span yesterday–just a month after German artists were able to plant white flags atop both of its towers and less than a week after protestors unfurled a pro-Palestine flag on the nearby Manhattan Bridge–Mr. de Blasio said the buck stops with him and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.
