WILMINGTON — Work to upgrade Veterans Memorial Highway here is progressing nicely, with paving expected to start after Labor Day.

As part of a visit to the North Country on Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo met at the "Lake Placid" hairpin turn, about five miles up, with New York State Department of Transportation officials, work crews and the masons who are restoring the historic stone wall that lines the road up Whiteface.

Stone workers from John Podmore Masonry in New Russia were on hand to greet the governor.

8. Crossbow hunting regulations are set
Wed Aug 27, 2014, 01:24 PM
Aug 2014

Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau

Gov. Cuomo last year put forward a plan in the budget to allow crossbow hunting and now it’s being put in place in time for the fall hunting season.

There was some speculation that it was an attempt to reach out to hunters, some of whom were upset by the SAFE Act, although crossbows had been allowed for a two-year trial period that ended in 2012. After that, lawmakers were unable to agree on a plan to extend or make permanent the use of crossbows which are distinct from traditional and compound bows.
