Cuomo signs bill to fine boaters who don’t wash vessel

Jon Campbell

Boaters who don’t wash their boats before entering New York waterways will soon face fines under a bill signed Tuesday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The new law, which will take effect in one year, is meant to combat invasive species like hydrilla, a fast-growing plant that can be found in the Cayuga Lake inlet in Ithaca. Certain invasive plants, clams, mussels and other species that can cause harm to waterways are often transported between waterways by boats.

I fully support the idea, living in the Finger Lakes area and having seen what invasive species of all sorts can do.
