(14,691 posts)It started as a little very localized neighborhood thing of a few blocks in the Greenwich Village section. Now it's this institution that has continued since 1973 without a break except in 2012 in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, as the parade route is in a section that was hard hit by flooding and blackouts. Every year there's a different theme and the next year, 2013, the theme was The Phoenix rising from the ashes. They have floats and music and anyone can take part as long as you're in some sort of costume or wearing a mask. As you can see, some people are amazingly creative. It's televised on cable tv station NY1 (Time Warner).

(3,263 posts)Thank you for the post and reply . I have to say this looks like a parade more my style although Macy's was fun to see in person.
I love a parade!

(14,691 posts)Yes I watched every year growing up but - now it's just a 3-hour toy commercial to me. The Halloween parade still pretty much has a home grown vibe although they do have corporate sponsors. If you go to see this parade, get there a few hours early. It starts at 7pm. The crowds can be huge and the NYPD employs fences in such a way that it can be hard to get around later. (crowd control - ugh)

(3,263 posts)The night before Thanksgiving NYC walking around the balloons being blown up and being up close is similar to what I do here - check out the floats etc in am or a day early before they start out (less crowds) but I do love a parade
Thanks for the tips
