Paid sick bill adds grace period for small businesses

Gloria Pazmino

Small businesses will have more time to adjust to an expanded paid sick leave law that was scheduled to take effect on April 1.

The amended version of the bill grants a six-month grace period for businesses with between five and 19 employees before the city imposes fines for unintentional violations of the new law.

Those penalties would not be leveled until October of this year.

The concession comes days after small business leaders and chairs from the city's chambers of commerce met with Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to ask for a delayed implementation of the law.
