Fracking fight dominates Earth Day in Albany

Scott Waldman

ALBANY—Despite a long moratorium, hydraulic fracturing was the dominant topic on Earth Day at the state Capitol, with both sides of the debate citing the environmental holiday.

A group of elected officials from around the state held a press conference to highlight the growing number of municipal fracking bans. The group, called Elected Officials to Protect New York, which claims more than 800 members, highlighted anti-drilling findings from around the country and called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to invest in renewable energy sources.

Lou Allstadt, a trustee of the village of Cooperstown and former Mobil Oil Corporation executive vice president, said New York's shale gas reserves were only a fraction of what the industry claimed and said fracking would endanger water sources across the state.
