Ohio offers in-state tuition to 'deferred' immigrants

Some good news for a change!

Starting later this month, young Ohio residents who are undocumented immigrants with temporary legal status can pay the lower in-state tuition at the state’s public universities.

The change means those students will save thousands of dollars a year from the out-of-state tuition they were previously asked to pay.

The Ohio Attorney General approved the change and Board of Regents Chancellor John Carey wrote to university presidents Tuesday.

It covers immigrants who were younger than 16 when they arrived in the U.S. The federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programs provides those students with two years without fear of deportation, allowing them activities such as working and driving....
