Related: About this forumYES YES YES! Charter schools lose school board vote! Despite Corbett's puppet's efforts!
York City School District had a board member meeting tonight that voted down, 7 to 2,
the proposal to close 3 of the district's 8 schools and open 3 charter schools.
Gashole Corbett sent an advisor/puppet to the district 2 years ago to 'help' with the budget crisis that
was created two ways a) by Corbett slashing the education budgets, and doing so in a manner that
hit poorer districts harder than other districts, and b) by charter schools leaching money ... and
as soon as the advisor got here, the first words out of his mouth was that he wanted the district
to go all charter. Before he saw or knew anything, he was making the sale for Corbett's charter
school buddies.....
On his advice, the teacher's union, without a contract for two years now, was offered a hideous
contract a few months ago. When they voted that down, the next offer was an even worse contract.
So then he tries to force the district school board to go for all charter schools, and when it didn't seem like that was going to be
approved, then tonight the vote was for 3 of 8 remaining schools to be charter.
The board voted it down, 7-2. One of the two attempted to forestall the vote after the school
board was presented a petition with 2500 signatures and many people attending the meeting
spoke clearly and sharply of all the negatives. Corbett's puppet was asked...by a young STUDENT,
what advantages will charter schools bring? New textbooks? Smaller class size? THE PUPPET HAD
NO ANSWER.... NO ANSWER...EVEN WHEN A PARENT STEPPED UP NEXT AND ASKED WHY DIDN'T
YOU ANSWER THE STUDENT'S QUESTION.
York City Schools were already badly burned by another charter, whose renewal was finally shot
down after over a year of appeals. That charter school misappropriated funds and use of public
buildings (rented out to businesses in the evening), and transferred special ed students without
proper procedures and approvals, etc.... and scored WORSE on the tests than the public schools.
But of course that charter schools CEO/founder walked away with millions in pay, literally multiple
millions per year, while he paid teachers an average of $35k a year, and refused to renew contracts
after two or three years because he wouldn't give any pay increases. Because teachers don't deserve
to pay rent, have transportation, and medical care, of course. They are just 'human capital'.
I am so very, very, very happy tonight. Now if we can just vote Corbett out in 20 days, maybe there
is some hope!!!!!!!!!!!!
