Greenville Health System hospital execs shared $2.4M in extra compensation as more job cuts loom

Greenville Health System rewarded senior management with $2.4 million in extra compensation in December 2015, three months before announcing plans to eliminate more than 400 jobs in the face of a $16 million shortfall, according to information obtained by The Greenville News.

The payments to 13 executives have come under fire from some Greenville County lawmakers opposed to a restructuring of GHS that takes it from a public nonprofit to a private nonprofit health system.

But GHS says the lawmakers' charges are "inaccurate, irresponsible and misleading."

The payments included $407,000 to CEO Mike Riordan and $259,000 for chief medical officer Dr. Angelo Sinopoli. Riordan's base salary for 2016 was $998,000, according to GHS, and Sinopoli's was $650,000. Base salaries for 2015 weren't immediately available.
