Lawmakers taking another crack at moped legislation
COLUMBIA — Lawmakers are making another effort to strengthen moped safety laws in South Carolina, where the pint-sized motor bikes are linked to an increase in fatal accidents on the state's roadways.
As it stands today, moped drivers are largely unregulated in the state, but a new moped safety bill advancing through the Legislature would require riders 21 or younger to wear a helmet, and all operators to register with the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles.
"There are lots of parts of the bill and a lot of things it does, but the overarching goal of the bill is to make the highways of South Carolina safer for people riding mopeds and the rest of the traveling public," said author Sen. Greg Hembree, R-North Myrtle Beach.
The bill additionally targets those who attempt to ride a moped while drunk or intoxicated. In the past, moped riders could not be charged with serious crimes if they were stopped by police.
