Silver-haired group taking their agenda to Texas Legislature
The Brazos Valley's senior representatives are ready to push for banning texting while driving, regulating predatory lending, curbing gerrymandering and allowing for medical marijuana use.
These are not the issues put forth by state Rep. John Raney, R-Bryan, or state Sen. Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown, but rather the wish list of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature, a volunteer organization created by the state Legislature in 1985 that lobbies on behalf of persons 60 years of age and older.
The TSHL, composed of 100 voting members, met in Austin in April to cull a swathe of political issues down to 10, which they plan to get sponsored by Texas lawmakers. It was the 15th meeting of the body.
Two Brazos Valley representatives, Linda Parrish and Al Campbell, sponsored topics that made the final roster -- regulating the payday and auto title lending industry and redistricting reform using an nonpartisan commission.
