Lawmakers sport “I’m Poncho” stickers following threats from gun-rights activists
AUSTINMany Texas lawmakers sported Im Poncho stickers Wednesday in support of Rep. Alfonso Poncho Nevárez, D-Eagle Pass, who was assigned a DPS security detail after receiving numerous threats from gun-rights activists.

Rep. Drew Springer, R-Muenster, came up with the idea after reading reports that Nevárez had received a security detail due to threats over his opposition to a bill that would allow unlicensed persons to carry handguns in plain view. Nevárez had joked that other members should wear Im not Poncho signs for their own safety.
I might disagree with him on a bill, but we need to have debates and not threaten people for their views, Springer said. Ours was a show of solidarity that were not going to let outside sources threaten us with violence.
Springer, who said he supports licensed open carry of handguns, estimated he had handed out nearly 70 stickers by lunch. Nevárez said he was overwhelmed by the support from his colleagues.
