Garcia received about 45.4 percent of votes and Alvarado received 41.7 percent in Saturday's election to fill the seat of the late state Sen. Mario Gallegos, according to preliminary results from the Harris County Clerk's office.
The date of the run-off election between the two Democrats will be announced by Gov. Rick Perry once an official count is complete, officials with the Secretary of State's Office said.
Predominantly Hispanic, state Senate District 6 includes Houston's East End, as well as parts of Pasadena, Galena Park and Baytown. Gallegos represented the district from 1994 until he died last October from complications related to a liver transplant.
