RICHMOND

A bill legalizing brass knuckles, throwing stars, ballistic knives and other similar weapons was approved Tuesday by the General Assembly.

It's been illegal to sell or give away those items, punishable by a $250 fine.

Del. Alfonso Lopez, D-Arlington, spoke against the bill (SB1130), which passed the House by a narrow margin, 56-42. The prohibition, which dates to the 1950s, is intended to keep those weapons out of the hands of gang members, he said.

"This bill is straight out of a Victorian crime novel," Lopez said on the House floor. "We're talking about blackjacks, brass knuckles, swords in canes, switch blades, throwing stars and, something not so funny, ballistic knives," whose blades can be fired using springs
