More health insurers want to offer plans in Washington’s exchange

But but the gubmit take over of healthcare limits choices.

Next year Washington could have a more robust health insurance market — both inside and outside of the exchange.

Four new companies are applying to sell health insurance for the individual market through the Washington Health Benefit Exchange's Healthplanfinder in 2015. If approved, that would bring the number of in-exchange insurers to 12.

One additional company has applied to sell insurance in the individual market outside of the exchange. If all proposals of this type were approved, 10 companies would be selling individual health insurance policies outside of the exchange.

Most people in Washington have health insurance through their employers. The individual market is for people who must purchase coverage for themselves and their families without that employer support.

“The proposals submitted certainly indicate that consumers will have more options available to them,” Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler said in a statement. “I expect that we’ll have even more robust markets inside and outside of the exchange for 2015. Increased competition is part of health care reform and that’s what we are seeing.”
