REI boosts wages in 25 percent of its stores including Seattle

REI employees in about one-quarter of the company's stores will get bumps in pay on Aug. 21.

The Kent outdoor retailer told employees this week that they will get boosts between 5 percent and 15 percent if they work in Seattle, Boston, Denver, Chicago, Portland, San Francisco or Washington, D.C.

"We are focusing first on urban areas where rising living costs are having a disproportionate impact," the company said in a statement.

Recreational Equipment Inc. came under fire earlier this month from Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant, who hosted a forum for REI employees to discuss the company's wages. Sawant led the charge for Seattle's ground-breaking $15 minimum wage, which other cities have replicated.
