http://www.postcrescent.com/story/news/local/2015/05/03/authorities-responding-shooting-near-trestle-trail-bridge-menasha/26850787/We go here to relax, fish, bike, walk across the bridge. Sometimes I bike over the bridge on my way to work. This stuff is just so different feeling when it's close to home.

(3,194 posts)Oh....the chance to save this cretin from the death penalty, and do what every criminal does....plead Not Guilty.
Wish he would have killed himself first, but thankfully he saved the taxpayers a trial and the cost of incarceration or 10 years worth of death penalty appeals.

(8,879 posts)Randomly targeted. 5 and 7 year old son and daughter survived. 11 year old perished along with the father. Mother survived but is in critical condition. This family was from Neenah, which is the sort of sister city to Menasha. It is these two cities that the bridge connects. A 31 year old man from Appleton was also killed. All victims shot at close range.
Murderer was from Menasha. He rode his bike to the bridge where he passed several of the estimated 75 people at the park/bridge at that time before shooting 3 fifths of this family and the Appleton man. He was recently estranged from his fiance, I think within the last week.
The doctor said there was a holster on his right him and ammunition on his left when he was brought to the emergency room.
I didn't catch the whole conference so don't quote me on this.

(8,879 posts)the other side, I presume. This bridge traverses Little Lake Butte Des Morts. It connects Neenah and Menasha. It is a foot/bike bridge. It used to be a bridge for trains before it was repurposed. On the Neenah side, Fritze Park, a small but very busy park. On the Menasha side is a set of locks for lowering boats from a river into the lake. After that the trail leads into a small suburban community. House lined streets mainly. I post this just to give you all a sense of the landscape.

(3,194 posts)Now is not the time to talk about gun control. That is a discussion for another time once this tragedy has faded from memory.
And gun control would certainly not help here, since he was a respectable former air force member, in other words, a GOOD GUY with a gun.
Maybe his ex-fiance, who is really torn up about HIS death, can get his name tattooed on herself. Seems like they both had a passion for tats, it's just a shame he can't fill the rest of his body with them now that he's dead.
I'm sure the reasons.....errrrr......EXCUSES....as to why he did this, are going to be coming from the family & friends soon. After all, he was under so much pressure after his engagement ended, what else could he do except kill some innocent people for absolutely no reason at all? And don't forget the PTS, I'm sure that will help us forgive him more, since after all, he suffered from it while fighting for OUR freedoms. All praise the military.

(10,176 posts)We heard about it on an internet police scanner after a friend of my daughter's who had just left our house to drive home to Green Bay called us and said Troopers were tearing down 41 full speed with lights on toward Appleton. When we heard the number of people shot, we assumed it was drug related.
What a horrible shock when we found out the truth. It goes to show something like this can happen anywhere.

(8,879 posts)Horrible shock indeed. Rumor initially was that it was drug related. People were talking about rental kayaks being paddled under the bridge where the drugs are exchanged. I can't see how that can actually happen, but who knows. You definitely weren't the only one thinking it was drug deal gone badly.
Small world here at DU.
