Bute: Traces Of Horse Drug In Carcasses In UK

Tests for bute in Findus food products have come back negative, but traces of the horse painkiller were found in eight horse carcasses from UK abattoirs, said Agriculture Minister David Heath.

Mr Heath told the House of Commons that bute, which is potentially harmful to human health, three of the eight carcasses entered the food chain in France.

Given the raid on an abattoir a couple of days ago, I'd say it's bound to have got into a product for humans somewhere.

1. I guess the real point here

is how long this has been going on for and possibly what's lurking in freezers too. I'm not usually in the least bit fussy about what I eat but am beginning to wonder now despite the fact I'm having haggis for lunch.

I would assume for the time being that fish remains safe.

Horsemeat scandal: Germany pulls lasagne off shelves.

Horsemeat has been detected in frozen lasagne on sale in Germany and supermarkets have started removing the product from their shelves.

The Real supermarket chain said it had withdrawn TiP frozen lasagne - the latest tainted processed food to figure in a Europe-wide scandal.

Other German retailers including Tengelmann and Rewe are now checking their processed beef products too.

The EU is urging member states to conduct random tests for horsemeat.

3. Terrible stuff.

Rewe lasagne is one of the few pieces of processed food i eat. I don't mind eating horse if it's advertised as such, but some broken down old farmer's nag full of drugs that would have knocked out Keith Moon is a step too far.

The nly answer to this is regulation, regulation and regulation.

2. MPs say horsemeat discoveries "tip of the iceberg"

(Reuters) - Discoveries so far of horsemeat in products sold as beef are likely to be the "tip of the iceberg", a parliamentary report into the scandal said on Thursday.

"The scale of contamination emerging in the meat supply chain is breathtaking," said Anne McIntosh, a legislator who chairs the cross-party Food and Rural Affairs Committee, which published the report. "More revelations will doubtless come to light in the UK and across the European Union."

Growing revelations about the use of horsemeat in products labelled beef have raised questions about the safety of the European food supply chain and prompted governments to send out a European Union (EU)-wide alert.

The EU's health chief said on Wednesday all companies that have handled falsely-labelled horsemeat were under suspicion, adding that the European Commission was considering strengthening EU rules on product labelling.
