Pardon to be re-examined for gay codebreaker Alan Turing

He is widely credited as the father of modern computing, and played a pivotal role in cracking the Nazi Engima cipher, but sixty years after his death Alan Turing campaigners are still awaiting a pardon from the government over his conviction for homosexual behaviour.

The campaign for a pardon today received a boost, albeit slight, from the Commons leader Sir George Young after he pledged to have another look at the case following lobbying by an MP.

Another chance for the government to do the right thing. No other Brit (including WS Churchill or RV Jones) did more to defeat the Nazis. Strange to think that the side he fought against would have put him in a concentration camp and maltreated him to death, while the side he fought for chemically castrated him. Any half decent government would find a loophole to pardon him and then put a statue of him on that plinth in Trafalgar Square.

and grant him the pardon. Too late for him, of course, but at least his memory will have some justice.

What was done to Alan Turing, who helped to save our country, was absolutely vile.
