I tried downloading the "free" version only to have it expire after 14 days.
I think it is "free" to download yes, but no longer is it free shareware.

(68,644 posts)If you want to catch the latest malware, you would want the freshest version.
But it would be more convenient to just update it.
And, I still prefer it to any for-cost program that gobbles up processor capacity and runs in the background.

(20,875 posts)It let me do one scan and that is the end of it. Says expired.
I do like SUPERAntiSpyware (and yes it is indeed "free" a lot ... bailed me out of a very huge deep hole more than once.
Sad to see this happen to a once "free" program out there.
I have about 5 or 6 computers (all old) and have to keep them up-to-date if I can (sans the
A21m ThinkPad (made in 1998; originally Windows 98 2nd ed. was running on it and it was upgraded to Windows 2000 (I bought this used) -- too old for anything much BUT you can indeed still get online w/it, so I keep this old little one; very low-risk IMO ).
Matilda
(6,384 posts)but I just kept searching for the free download and eventually I got it. I'm able to update regularly, as before, and keep scanning as normal.
You have to keep searching and rejecting all the paid versions that come up, but it's out there.

After you download it a screen will appear. The "free" version is shaded (as if not available) whereas the paid version is lit up.
Click on the shaded area and the free download will begin.
You get two of the options to use for free with this.
Thanks for the encouragement btw! I looked long and hard and alas, I found it!
Matilda
(6,384 posts)One more thing I've learned is that if you're asked if you want to get updates and say "yes", it can take you to the latest version of the free trial period only. This is a new trick, and I got caught.
All you can do if that happens is uninstall and reinstall the version you want.
I think Malwarebytes is excellent, but I have Webroot Anti-Virus installed, and it catches most everything that comes up, so I don't feel I need to pay for Malwarebytes as well. I just run it about once a week, and sometimes it comes up with a few things that Webroot has missed.
CountAllVotes
(20,875 posts)The one I downloaded must be a bit different as I can still run it but it said it was good for only 3 days when I downloaded it but ... it still works and yes, you can still go in and get the updates even though it has a red ! mark next to it and says it is expired.
Have this on my other old computer now.
I actually found some 13 year old viruses on and old ThinkPad I have! The site that viruses are from no longer exists but as for the viruses themselves, who knows!
Anyone got that old one cleaned up and it found a couple on my old desktop as well.
In case you hadn't guessed, all of my equipment is old sans a Fujitsu Lifebook with Windows 7 Pro. on it that I bought refurbished. Its ok I guess ... not real thrilled with it however.
Thanks again for your help. Just don't fall for the "expired" trick. I bet the catch a lot of people that way!
Matilda
(6,384 posts)I suddenly developed a problem with Malwarebytes it wouldnt open, so I thought Id remove it and start again. But it wouldnt uninstall I kept getting a message telling me it wasnt on the computer and therefore couldnt uninstall! Some Googling found a forum where others had the same problem, and you have to go to another website to get instructions on how to uninstall.
What Ive done now is gone to the website Old Versions and installed a previous version, 1.44. Its working just fine, but it will cease to be supported in March 2015, so Ill have to rethink when that time comes.
But I am annoyed that Malwarebytes keeps advertising Free Version when what it really means is Free Trial. It seems theyre making a determined push to get everyone on to the paid version. I just wish theyd be more honest. I dont want to spend more money if the free version will get rid of problems for me.
CountAllVotes
(20,875 posts)and yes, it is the free version.
However, there are all sort of things that show up to make you think that it is no longer free. You have to say DECLINE on one on the free versions I have to get the free version.
It is a partial version of the real thing I've noticed. However, it is worked for me and it is ...
Version 2.0.2.1012
Is this the free version you are running?
Sorry to hear of all the problems you've been having. That is NO GOOD at all!
Matilda
(6,384 posts)No difficulties with expiry dates or prompts to sign up to the paid version, and it seems to be very efficient.
However, I'm no longer sure about Webroot Anti-Virus - I've used it for about ten years and always had confidence, but lately, Malwarebytes is finding Trojans, so I'm thinking perhaps Webroot has got left behind, because it should be catching those Trojans.
So I figure either I'll have to look at a new anti-virus program, or perhaps buy Malwarebytes after all. It's currently $AU29.95 for three computers, which really is pretty good value. So I'll either get a new anti-virus and run Malwarebytes free, or continue with Webroot but back it up with a subscription to Malwarebytes.
CountAllVotes
(20,875 posts)I've been using this one for many years and yes, it is free.
I'd strongly recommend it as it finds all the junk it seems to me.
I ran it recently on an old ThinkPad I have (c. 1999) and it found 4 viruses from a site iwin.com. It was a site you could play games on.
In any event, it deleted those four problems and said ThinkPad is still going strong!
Link:
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the free download link for Version: 6.0.1128 | Size: 17.9MB
I hope this helps.
Matilda
(6,384 posts)I'm wary of adding new programs sometimes, because they're not always what they seem, and Webroot was recommended by an IT guy way back when I first got a computer. It's been great, but I think it's now getting left behind.
I'll give Superantispyware a try - you can't afford to be inadequately protected.

(1 post)Does anyone know about CRYPTO WALL 3.0? I only discovered it the other night and have cleaned them out (I hope) - HUndreds of files ! I have removed them all from my external hard drives, jump drives and computers but I do not know if I now need to re-install the OS (Windows 7) Can someone advise me about this. I have no idea how long those HELP_DECRYPT files were on my computers and external drives but since I had so many copies of everything and most were unharmed I searched out and completely deleted all of the encrypted stuff.
Am I still vulnerable even after removing those encrypted files?

One of my picks for best new service of this decade (and they don't even collect your personal information). Notice that most of the services that have been rated so far offer no way to ever leave.
Note: This is perpetual work-in-progress. Listings will expand and improve. Humans really do read the TOS agreements so it takes time.

(47,675 posts)The technique has been around for at least 40 years and it only leads to disaster. Don't bother. That's especially true with the new breed. An i7 6-core at 3.3GH is hardly bothered by what most people do with it. I stress mine from time to time, but it is more than sufficient to handle the load.

(29 posts)I have been overclocking since I boosted my Celeron 300A from 300Mhz to 450Mhz and I have never damaged a motherboard or processor in all that time and I have lost count of how many different systems I have overclocked.
Is it possible to damage your system? Sure if you have no clue what you are doing. But those same people would probably damage a non-overclocked system also. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Right now my system has a E2180 OC'd from 2Ghz to 2.66Ghz. Does it make a noticeable difference in day to day use? Not much to be honest. But every bit helps when playing games. It's free performance for the taking as long as you know what you are doing.

(12,958 posts)First thing I do when I get a new PC or laptop is go to ninite. You check off the software you want, most of it is open source. Ninite generates a single downloader, you click it and it installs everything hands free. No toolbars, etc, are installed. Clean installs only.
To update, you simple click on the downloader file and it updates everything with the latest versions.
You can install all your software in a new PC build in a single click.
