Is a real bargain. They are very responsive and seem to stay on top of new threats.

I don't like paying for things I don't need but I don't begrudge malwarebytes that amount of money...?.

4. You can still use MBAM as standalone scanner/removal tool...

as I understand it, the paid version includes "live" protection, other stuff. I never used the MBAM pro and only use online scanners like Eset or Kaspersky from time to time, no real-time protection for me... I make regular backups just in case.

One that gets good reviews is Emsisoft Anti-Malware https://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/

7. For Windows, I've always liked Avast

It's got its annoyances, but it's been pretty good for me as a first line of defense. Combined with Ad-block Plus on Firefox, I haven't had any serious infections in many years.

If what you say is true about Malwarebytes, that's disappointing since I've often used it as my backup.

On edit, one caveat: I'm not a heavy net surfer, especially to risky sites. YMMV.

14. I think it's worth the money

I use the paid versions of Malwarebytes and Bitdefender. I use the computer for my business, and it's not worth the risk of a free version missing something or providing fewer features (even if I don't use those extra features often). I also run the free version of Super AntiSpyware now and then, and it hasn't picked up anything that Bitdefender might have missed.
