Is it a Windows 10 problem or new laptop?

Last edited Sat Dec 30, 2017, 09:54 PM - Edit history (2)

There have been multiple problems, possibly the simplest being this #1: An unexpected, unasked-for Restart. This happens 1-2 times per week. All I use the machine for is mainly DU and less than a dozen other websites and g-mail. I can be on a website when the screen goes black and the Restart gets itself going. Different from my own seldom Restarts, these, after my log-in return to the website I was at.

#2 - Windows 10? I almost never can Copy and Paste images/pictures from the web into DU or anywhere else. With the old laptop that was upgraded to Windows 10, there were encrypted images that couldn't be reproduced, but the rest of them could be. Now it's almost all that can't be done, nor to e-mail.

#3 - Two old programs from the old machine are installed by CD into the new one: Microsoft Works, with Word Processor. This was the only thing I used for documents. Now, I can't Paste text from web. Plus, the Ms Word Processor open document closes out and disappears when Paste is attempted. I've had to resort to Pasting into a new/Compose g-mail blank to prepare text to post into DU. g-mail doesn't seem to have a shortcut to keep open, so I have to go back and forth to the target website, Copy, then open g-mail again to Paste.

1. It's not Windows 10

I have 5 or 6 machines running Windows 10. That's not normal Windows 10 behavior.

After scanning for malware and backing up any important files and pics, I'd do a reset.

More info: https://www.onmsft.com/news/windows-10-reset-refresh-windows-10-installation-better-performance

If that doesn't help, I'd investigate the hardware. It's also possible that the programs you've installed are not compatible.

with the MS Help Desk, I ended up reformatting. My problems started with a Windows update that resulted in my MS Office going wacko. Since I had Windows 10 Home as an upgrade from Windows 7, I sprung for a new OS of Windows 10 Pro. $199.00.

I discovered a lot of interesting stuff:

You can purchase the new OS and download it to a functioning computer, copy it to a thumb drive and set up the broken computer to boot from USB. You only find this out when you install the OS. The People from MS Sales did not seem to know that. That's a big time-saver, because in my case I had to reformat into Windows 7, then buy and download W10 to the troubled computer and upgrade. One thing, the Lenovo laptops are really easy to reformat. Yeah it went to Windows 7 from my old CDROM's but installed all the drivers. Of course, you can download the drivers from the Lenovo support website.

All my important files run through Dropbox, so as soon as I re-installed Dropbox they reloaded. Plus I had done a back-up as well.

The MS Tech People I dealt with were very nice, helpful and (most of all) patient. MS really seems to have improved in this area.

I remember a number of years ago telling them "It should be a policy to not leave people on "hold" for longer than it takes to install Linux!"

Does it shut down or restart? Restarting by itself is not normal.

Is there any error message on restart? Or when it is restarting does it say it is updating? Win 10 has a fair amount of patches now that will go for a day or two after you get a new machine but it typically notifies you before I restarts.

How are you copying? Right click? Ctrl c?

You just bought this did you not? Was it new or refurb?

4. Shut down? It just disappears and Restart gets going. No error message, no updating.

As for Copying, Edge doesn't have menu/options for cutting/Copying/Pasting. I select the text, do Ctrl+C, then go to the Word Processing program blank document and attempt to Paste, which in that program can be by the Clipboard icon, or in the Edit menu Paste, or Ctrl+V. None of them work to Paste. The blank document goes unEnabled with the error message "Not Responding" and then it disappears itself. Lots of "disappearing" going on. In a little while I'm going to uninstall and install Works 9 that contains the Word Processor.

It was new.

12. I'm in Chrome right now and the Paste problem persists into MS Word Processor.

That is, I can Paste directly into DU, but not to MS Word Processor. Or rather, can Paste web address/link into MS WP but not text. Same as in Edge.

So I'm leaning to think it's a software/MSWP program problem. Might try Uninstall/reinstall or looking for newer downloads.

9. Copy - cut - paste have keyboard shortcuts
Thu Dec 28, 2017, 06:00 PM
Dec 2017

They are <ctrl>-c <ctrl>-x <ctrl>-v respectively.

Sometimes, particular programs and websites disable menu access to these functions.

As examples, some logon screens won't allow the pasting of passwords, and some web designers don't want you to easily copy text from their sites.

Often enough, when the menu access is turned off, the keyboard shortcuts still work.

It's something to try.

10. Yeah, those are the shortcuts I use. They work on picking things up to the Clipboard, but

not on Pasting into the Works 9/Word Processing program. This program, an older one, still receives this Pasting on the previous laptop.

13. ***UPDATE on some (small) OUTCOMES***
Fri Dec 29, 2017, 12:22 AM
Dec 2017

There was a tiny bit of hope that a fix had occurred about problem #3. After getting nowhere with Tech Support from HP and MS, I did a Search for download updates for MS Works 9, and there appeared to be one dating from 2012, a Security update. No idea whether the Download actually happened - there was an window saying "Thanks for downloading..." but no sign of it in the list of Downloads. Opened the MS WP program and attempted the Pasting of text from a website and, here was the bit of hope, it *did* Paste. But an attempt to add a second Paste ended up the same as in the problem, the document became non-responsive and then just disappeared. Also, attempted to Copy/Paste image/picture, no-go.

********But: Have stumbled on my own work around. There has always been an option, "New Window". So my main use for this Pasting is to assembled multiple-pastings in one place to then Copy the whole thing and Paste it into DU post. The second/new window allows me to have that space to Paste into, whether in a blank e-mail or in the blank DU post, until I'm ready to select it all for submitting/posting.

So, the problems remain, with a little step forward. Thanks, everybody.

14. ***2nd UPDATE/work around - for the MS Word Processor problem with Paste

Just tried *SAVING* the blank/open Word Processor document. Previously, this blank was for discarding once all the multiple Pastes had been added on to completion. Well, Saving/naming the blank AFTER EACH PASTE *works* without disappearing into the ether!1 YAY!1

After all the additions to the Pastings are completed and then Copy/Paste to the DU entry, the document can be Deleted.
