Looking for a free DVD ripping program

I just want a nice simple to use program to rip some dvd movies so that I can load on my phone to play while commuting.

It will squish anything into the proper format and has some fairly good default settings for Apple stuff.

Some of the higher quality formats will take a long time to convert. For a device with a small screen it's probably not be worth the wait. A fast, lower quality conversion may work just as well.

But a 480p fully optimized H.264 will look pretty good on anything that can play it.

There is a lot of weirdness that goes on with DVDs, including copy protection schemes. The handbrake community has very active discussions about these issues.

I've found old television shows can have some really odd quirks, especially if they were created and edited as both film and video and the creator of the DVD cared to make the best possible transfer. But I don't think anyone cares anymore. I see sloppy conversions everywhere, even on broadcast television.

I'm not sure if you can still find it, but DVD Decrypter was a good program as well.

7. Freemake

I just started using this free converter/ripper program called Freemake, and I love it! I have a laptop, a netbook, and an Ipad, which means that I have to convert files constantly for different formats. The instructions for the DVD ripper process are really easy.

9. Is this for purchased DVDs?

If so, wow. I have long been annoyed that I can't do as I wish with what I purchased.
