Android help

I've got a Galaxy S3. It uses the usual Android OS.

I've got a strange problem. When I'm typing in my web browser the automatic word spacing feature doesn't work. The automatic capitalization doesn't either.

However, it works fine in email and messaging.

I've turned the Swype settings on and off to no avail. It simply will not auto space.

any ideas?

For the automatic capitalization check this (I'm running android 4.2.2 on my Galaxy Nexus so your menu might be different):

Settings -> Language & Input -> Android Keyboard (settings icon) -> check Auto-capitalization

I use Google Voice typing for pretty much all input and it auto spaces fine. Have you tried uninstalling Swype to see if it works without Swype installed?

Made sure I didn't accidentally turn it off. You can turn some things on and off by swiping a certain way. No joy.

It's weird. It works fine in messaging and email, but not in my browser.

I don't use Chrome on Android myself because I don't like the interface. I'm not advocating for one browser or another but my thinking is that from your description, the issue may be browser specific. You may want to try one of the other popular browsers like Dolphin or Maxthon and see if the issues continue. Just a thought...

I thought that the S3 version of Android was upgraded to 4.1.2 (which 4.1.x version may depend on your carrier) or so so you should have the application "Chrome" available on your S3. You may have gotten an OS upgrade from your carrier and something in the upgrade caused an issue with the stock Android browser.

I'm fairly sure that the stock Android browser is not supported any longer under the Jelly Bean version (4.1.x) of the Android OS. The stock Android browser should be there but it is not supported any longer. I suggest that you try Chrome and see if the problems continue. If for some reason Chrome is not on your phone then I'd suggest downloading either it and/or Dolphin from the Google Play store (both are free) and give one or both of them a whirl.

If you don't want to go that far at first you might also try clearing the cache for both swype and the android keyboard.
